Risk/Insurance Assessment
Brian Hawkins works
closely with a number of companies involved in risk assessment and particularly
with Ormon Risk Analysis for whom he acts as the consultant responsible for
geotechnical aspects. Much of this work involves assessing the risk of extra-over
costs related to civil engineering contracts and reports have been provided
for a number of DBFO contracts with values in excess of £50 million.
Ground conditions varied from glacial deposits on the M1 to disused mine workings
on the M62/M1 and the interbedded limestones/swelling clays on the A417.
Geotechnical advice is given on which insurance brokers base offers of insurance
cover to contractors. This may be in respect of problems related to ground
conditions or associated difficulties which otherwise might have been expected
to give rise to a contractual claim, eg assessment of potential extra over
costs for the £485 million North Birmingham Ring Road.
This aspect of his work usually involves establishing the ground conditions
from the information available and visiting the offices of the consultants/contractors
in order to assess the proposed design and/or working methods.
Where insurance companies are concerned, a continued contact with site activities
is maintained to observe the works, not only to minimise possible problems
during the works but also to understand the reasons for any claims which may
be made against the insurance cover.
