Dr A Brian HawkinsAs a member of staff at the University of Bristol, Brian Hawkins developed a strong engineering geological research unit, supervising over 35 PhD students. He has published extensively and was awarded a Doctor of Science degree for this work. He edited the Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and is currently Editor in Chief of the Bulletin of the International Association for Engineering Geology.

Becoming increasingly involved in engineering works in the UK and abroad, he joined the British Geotechnical Association and subsequently became a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Materials, Minerals and Mining and the Institution of Highways and Transportation. Other professional memberships include the Geological Society, the British Tunnelling Society and the Quaternary Research Association. He is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Geologist and European Engineer.

Brian took early retirement from the University to concentrate on his consultancy but continues to lecture to Civil Engineers and final year Geology undergraduates.

From his long experience in engineering geology/geotechnics, he advises local authorities, public utilities, contractors and consultants both at the conceptual stage and on the practical aspects of construction works. In addition, he advises insurance firms and lawyers and has been involved as an Expert Witness in a number of arbitrations in Britain and abroad.
